In all the enterprises in which he has been interested, Mr. Westing house's dynamic personality has been a most potent influence. He has gathered around him a group of engineers and scientists - men who dealt in an intangible thing - inventive power. The few who were far-sighted enough to aid the air brake when it was seeking for recognition, have been enriched.

Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania Vol 1 Classic Reprint John W Jordan 9781332130863 Books
This book has histories of some families that generally had an ancestor who came from western Pennsylvania. It does not cover very many early immigrants to that part of Pennsylvania, although it purports to do so. It seems, rather, that the author chose prominent people who were alive when he wrote the book and included their family histories for the purpose of showing how wonderful the family tree is, etc. It was basically the thing I hate most about some people who do genealogy--they only want to do it for their own self-aggrandizement. Even there, I could stand it if it gave a broader view, but it doesn't. That's without even addressing the fact that the book was digitized by an optical character reader, making it very difficult to read. Save your money. Join Ancestry.com and look in their card catalog for books about Pennsylvania and its people. There are podcasts about how to use Ancestry.com to your best advantage. I had been a member for years before I discovered this. One of the best things on the site is a little hard to find; specifically, the card catalog. But once you find it, you'll have hit pay dirt. Of course, having all the census records at your fingertips doesn't hurt either.Product details

Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania Vol 1 Classic Reprint John W Jordan 9781332130863 Books Reviews
While I sympathize with reviewer whose review was entitled; "Truly Awful", and the issue he brings up can certainly be said about a number of books relating to genealogy The truth of the matter, at least regarding this particular book, is that it was a simply a product of it's time, namely 1915. During the last quarter of the 19th Century and up until the first quarter of the 20th, books such as this were essentially written and produced as a type of subscription. He is correct about it's primarily being written about prominent men, because that was its intended purpose, and in most cases, the long departed men whose visages' grace the pages of this type of book paid a substantial amount of money to have their often inflated bio's included for posterity. I just took a moment and looked through a sample, and yep, that is exactly what this book appears to be.....That doesn't necessarily mean that the book holds no value, but these type of books are typically specific to these particular men, and I've found that oftentimes you can find a great deal of information here and there, but you have to be willing to read through the biographies, which can sometimes be quite challenging.....
Interesting read
It gave me some of the information I was looking for.
